Leadership is a practice shaped by life experiences, context, and community need; there is no one way to do it. Yet dominant culture assumptions about who leaders are, how they work, and what they need are often limiting and perpetuate an oppressive status quo.
A NEW VISION
for Collective Leadership
What if we move away from training leaders to follow the rules of philanthropy, nonprofits, and academic institutions? How can we provide the adaptive support all people practicing leadership need to drive change—in their way—in their communities and the nation? This is a shared path to equitable, inclusive, and highly effective change.
The organizations featured on this page have informed this expansive conception of leadership and leadership development. We welcome you into a space of curiosity, innovation, and trust—a space where we will advance conversations that have simmered for a while, ask some urgent new questions, and share ideas to move us all from contemplation to decisive action.
These five organizations collaborated under a grant funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in its Leadership Learning Connection initiative. They explored community-driven leadership from many angles, reflecting and learning together. This website provides their insight and resources for others to use.
